Welcome to Glut!

Hello! Thanks for visiting my blog. I should probably introduce myself. My name is Caroline and I’m a freelance writer, editor and newbie blogger, loving life at home with my partner Seb, and my wonderful energetic, funny, exhausting, fascinating little boy, Sidney.

I called this blog Glut because a lot of the cooking I do comes from having a glut of vegetables, herbs or fruit that I need to use up. Often there’s too much for one dish, so I’ll find as many ways as possible to make several meals from a rampant sage, chard that’s taking over the raised bed, or a downpour of apples in the autumn. I’m lucky enough to live around the corner from a farmers’ market so I often succumb to bargains there, too, and end up with too many strawberries or courgettes for two and a half people to realistically eat in a week.

A couple of years ago we bought our first home – an ex-council maisonette in bustling Brixton, in south London. It’s a 1960s build with some original features that I love and, most importantly and luckily for us, a small garden shaded by a beautiful and abundant apple tree. My creative juices went into overload and we were soon ripping out old carpets, stripping walls and filling the house with second-hand furniture, loads of colour and plenty of plants. We built a raised bed along one side of the garden, created a modern-day rock garden at the end with the slabs that used to serve as a patio and started to grow vegetables and herbs.

Then Sidney arrived and everything good was even better.

As most mums will probably agree, when little ones are really little, life is all about keeping them well fed and well slept. Once Sidney started on solids I was soon whipping up special meals and treats in the hope that he wouldn’t throw everything on the floor. He’s always been a good eater, but he’s something of a connoisseur. He likes a lovingly cooked lunch or dinner and I enjoy making them for him.

This blog is about our life together – me cooking for a French partner and growing boy, growing the vegetables and herbs that make our food so much more tasty, and decorating our slightly chaotic but very happy home. I’m not a chef, gardener, designer or photographer, so don’t expect anything slick here. Like our home, it’s all a little bit ramshackle and not at all perfect, but hopefully the food is tasty, the house is a happy one, and the garden lush and plentiful. The idea is to make life easier with a new person in tow so that we can all muddle along happily together.

I hope you find something worth reading and perhaps some inspiration.

Enjoy!

Caroline
